The Gold Coast Street Library came about after a member of the GCHN held a book stall at Gold Coast Homeless Connect and realised that the concept (used in other cities world-wide would be popular here on the Gold Coast).

The Street Library concept was put to the GCHN and added to our action plan.

From there a sub-group met to progress the project.

Why have a street library?

To access a Public Library people, need ID and a fixed address.

Many homeless people are well educated but lack access to a broad range of reading material.

Appearance, dignity and confidence issues, including low literacy levels, prevent some homeless people from going to public libraries.

Reading can provide an important avenue for homeless people to creatively express themselves, to continue their learning and personal development, partake in something they enjoy and to escape from their hardships.
